Nick Falkoff believes that climate activists can come in many forms. As the general manager of Auburndale Builders, he’s helping construct a path forward for tradespeople to learn the skills they’ll need to build the homes of tomorrow.

Most people don’t realize the role that construction plays in climate change. But by some estimates, buildings account for 40 percent of all energy related carbon emissions globally, when factoring in the carbon released in the creation of buildings and the lighting, heating, and cooling of them once they’re completed. That’s why Falkoff is among the region’s leaders in pushing for high performance techniques in homebuilding, and why he’s creating educational opportunities for people to learn how construct buildings in ways that are better for the planet.

Weston project featured in Weston Wellesley Magazine

Our current project in Weston was recently featured in the article “Building energy-efficient homes to suit all stages of life” in the WellesleyWeston Magazine summer 2021 issue. Designed by architect Ken Tatro of the architecture firm Christopher P. Williams, the home utilizes five Passive House principles: super-insulated walls, roofs and floors, airtight construction, high-performance glazing of windows and glass doors, thermal-bridge-free detailing, and heat recovery ventilation to exhaust stale indoor air and bring in fresh outdoor air. The home has a free standing pavilion the size of a two car garage with solar panels on the roof. Auburndale Builders was able to use reclaimed foam for insulating the walls and reduced the concrete used by using wood flooring in the basement instead of a traditional slab.
